If you have a real solid fuel fire â you are lucky by Spot Biddle
When you look for a fire you will have to decide the type of fuel it will use, do you want a gas powered fire, a gas effect fire powered by electricity that has a gas effect or do you want a real fuel fire such as wood or coal. You may even opt for a DVD of a fire to play on your integrated TV.
It is best to have some fuel stored near your fire in a coal bucket or hod and use fire tongs or a small coal shovel to take the few initial lumps from the coal bucket. These can either be purchased as separate items or you could use the tools from a companion set. In our experience at the initial fire lighting stage it is advisable not to pour fuel directly from your coal bucket or hod (sometimes also referred to as a scuttle) as dust from the fuel can choke the fire.
Fireplace Fenders are used to add decor to the fireplace and to stop any spillage from the fire falling off the hearth and onto the floor. You can choose from a very extensive range of fire fenders from a basic plain base fender through fancy ornate fenders and even the larger club fenders for the larger fire place.
When your fire is roaring you of course need to keep safe with your chimney. Chimney sweeping is often thought of as a dirty job, Ill give you a bit of history here. When chimneys were first required it was then realised that they were going to need to be cleaned, hence chimney sweeps. In this time chimney sweeps realised small children were better for this and started to employ them for, what is reported, very little money however this was unsafe work. There was public outcry of this and in 1840 a law was passed that made it illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to sweep chimneys, and this law is still in practice now.
Should your chimney develop cracks or other damage you can repair it with fire cement . Other items you can use to maintain it include stove ropes, black lead polish, coal paint, grate paint, stove paint and spare coals for gas fires.
A fireplace is often designed in a style that matches the house it is in. These days you can have a fire or no fire at all. The fireplace is designed to contain the fire, and then the decorative part is to make the fire a feature in the room. The fire is normally for warmth however it can also be used for cooking.
