The idea of using hands or any container for measuring solids is still acceptable as a practice but what about liquids? This is where you really need to have a measuring cup to make sure you are not putting either less or more. However, for liquids, measuring cups will give you accurate quantities. You can keep a separate measuring cup for liquids and a different one for solids. For solids, use those measuring cups that are used for estimating and for when an ingredient's exact measure isn't critical to the food item you are preparing. But when you seek accuracy in the quantity of solids, do go for a scale to weigh it and then decide on the quantity. Using a scale with a measuring cup is a must when making delicacies like sauces and pastries, where accuracy is crucial.

A measuring cup that is sized to the top rim works much better in obtaining perfect measures. In this case you can use a scraper, spatula or ruler to level solids and then determine the quantity. There are several measuring cups that has marked quantity scale on the outer side and has transparent container. This will allow you to see how much you are going to put in that. A liquid measuring cup will have scale marked in liters and the solid ones will have units in grams. Keep a Measuring Cup clean all the time because with multiple usage, the materials tend to stick and with time get germinated.
