7. Lighting: It is important not to have too much fluorescent lighting. If you're going to do it, allow for one of the long bulbs to illumine the floor or underside of a cabinet. That way it provides light, but all you see is the glow. For your ceiling lights a dimmer goes a long way.

8. Cabinets: Fine wood such as teak or bamboo is popular in contemporary cabinetry, but don't feel like you have to go modern to have luxury. Mahogany or painted oak can be just as attractive.
