The Parts of a Bowling Alley by Dark Sith
Although they may sound similar, a bowling lane and a bowling alley are different things. A bowling alley, consisting of several parts, is the space used for bowling. One of those parts, and probably the most important, is the bowling lane.
The bowling alley is, in essence, the sum of all parts that make up the whole bowling area. It is composed of several parts, one of the most important which is the bowling lane. The bowling lane is the long plane that you see in front of you when you bowl. The lane consists of long wooden boards joined together to form a lane that is 75 feet long and 3.5 feet wide. The bowling lane is always smooth; it is, after all, where the ball is meant to pass.
On each side of the lane, the gutters are placed. The gutters are composed of rubber or plastic and are 60 feet long. The length starts from the foul line and extends well to the pins. When a player's ball rolls over to the gutter, a player incurs a miss. Just beyond the gutters' sides, the borders separate one bowling lane from another.
The bowling wall is the wall at the end of the lane, facing the players. It is usually decorated with the name and logo of the bowling center. The bowling machine is located on the other side of this wall.
Bowling machine manufacturers supply bowling centers with these machines. Their function is to place and rearrange the pins, and retrieve and return the bowling ball. The most common bowling game, the ten-pin, uses ten pins. The bowling machine works automatically, but is monitored by bowling center personnel.
The last part of a bowling alley is the scoreboard which is presented in the form of monitors placed high above the lanes for the players to see. The scoreboard electronically keeps track of each of the player's scores and progress and it is controlled by a computer.
These are the important parts of a bowling alley, and for aspiring bowlers, it's always a good thing to know what they are.
